What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are made of various kinds of natural and man-made or synthetic substances e.g. hyaluronic acid which is injected into the dermis. They help restore skin and facial contours to their former youthful appearance and are most commonly used to fill and smooth away wrinkles on the face. They can also be used as ‘volumisers’ to plump and lift cheeks, add volume and definition to thin lips and improve the appearance of ageing hands.

There are broadly speaking 2 types of dermal filler available in the UK – Permanent and non-permanent fillers. Skin Deep Medical only uses market leading fillers such as Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm Ultra, Teosyal Puresense and Belotero which are all non-permanent and biodegradable

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule that exists naturally in almost all living organisms. It binds water and can act as a lubricant and shock absorber in movable parts of the body such as joints. It is also important for the transport of nutrients, regulating water balance and giving volume and structure to our skin

Which areas of the face can be treated?

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) fillers are used primarily in the lower half of the face. Although dermal fillers can, in some circumstances, be used on most areas of the face. The product chosen by the practitioner is dependant on the type of skin and the depth of line. Lines and folds can be lifted and smoothed, cheek bones can be highlighted and definition added to the jaw line. It can also be used in the frown lines above the nose, often in conjunction with muscle relaxing injections.

The most common areas treated are:

  • Nose to mouth lines (the nasolabial folds)
  • Between the eyebrows (the glabella lines)
  • Lip enhancement (adding volume, shape and hydrating lips)
  • Cheeks and chin (shaping and contouring)
  • Back of the hands, décolletage, face, neck (skin revitalisation)
  • Other areas can be treated. Please discuss with the medical practitioner at the time of consultation

How do Dermal Fillers work?

By boosting the skin’s supply of hyaluronic acid, Dermal fillers revitalise and add volume to the skin, instantly diminishing the appearance of lines and wrinkles, and giving a natural softer look. A soft gel consisting of stabilized (minimally modified), non-animal hyaluronic acid is injected. The gel is tissue-friendly and closely resembles the hyaluronic acid that exists naturally in the body. It is long-lasting but not permanent. Dermal fillers are specifically designed to add volume to facial features and improve facial contours. There are a number of different fillers available. Each is designed to work in different levels of the skin to achieve the optimum treatment outcome.

Dermal fillers, unlike anti wrinkle injections (Botox) that relax the muscles that cause the wrinkles, fill/smooth away lines and/or creases

Does treatment hurt and is pain relief required?

All products used by Skin Deep Medical contain local anaesthetic for a more comfortable treatment experience.

Generally, further pain relief is not necessary. Some people may experience mild discomfort or be more susceptible to pain. If this is the case, a local anaesthetic topical cream can be applied to the area prior to treatment.
